A passenger has died after he became seriously ill while travelling on the Waterford to Dublin train this morning.

Iarnród Éireann confirmed that the incident happened on the 7.50am service from Plunkett Station in Waterford, when the train was in the Mullinavat area of Co Kilkenny.

A person on board experienced a "medical emergency", according to the company.

Ambulance services were called to the area, with staff on board and other passengers providing help to the man.

The train was stopped for some hours at Glendonnell level crossing in south Kilkenny while paramedics attended to the passenger, but it was confirmed early this afternoon that he had passed away.

"Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends," an Iarnród Éireann spokesman said.

In the meantime, the train returned to Waterford and passengers were put on the 11am service to Dublin Heuston.

Iarnród Éireann said staff met those on board and assistance was provided for anyone who needed it.
