Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating reports of a list of "personal images" of women being posted online without consent.
As many as 250 women may have had been included on a "list" on social media, which is purporting to have names of people who shared intimate photos in the past.
The list is reported to have been uploaded on a private Snapchat account, which claims to have the images of the women and is threatening to post the picture online.
It is understood the issue goes back some years and started when young people, separately, shared private photos of themselves, with partners or boyfriends or friends.
Gardaí are now investigating if those photos have found themselves in the possession of a person or persons now making threats to publish them online.
It is understood a number of possible victims of the threat have come forward to gardaí in Wexford, who are looking into whether there may be others outside of the Wexford area.
No arrests have been made, but the investigation is still at an early stage and involves a significant number of gardaí.
A garda spokesperson said this morning that members in the Eastern Region are investigating a number of reports about the "posting, sharing and uploading of personal images online".
In a statement, gardaí said that the publication and/or sharing of intimate images without consent is a criminal offence.
"Any person who is concerned that they have been a victim following the uploading of personal explicit imagery online without their consent, at any time, should contact their local garda station."
