Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a prisoner transport van was struck in a hit-and-run in Monaghan.
At approximately 6.45pm yesterday, a gold-coloured BMW X5 crashed into an Irish Prison Services van on the N2 at Kilcrow, Clontibret.
No injuries were reported.
The BMW left the scene and was found burnt out a short distance away.
Gardaí said several people were observed leaving the scene of the vehicle fire in a grey or black Audi A4 with Northern Ireland-registration plates.
They believe the BMW X5 was stolen in Ashbourne Co Meath on 15 May.
While the correct registration of the vehicle is 04-D-77272, it was bearing false registration plates of 06-D-520 at the time of the crash.
Gardaí are looking for people who were in the vicinity of
the scene between 5.30pn and 7pm yesterday, particularly those with camera footage.
They are also looking to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Monaghan town centre between 9am and 7pm. who may have seen the BMW or Audi.
Anyone with information in relation to the stolen BMW between the theft and the time of the crash is also asked to contact gardaí.
Gardaí want to know where it was parked, stored, or refuelled.
