Gardaí are investigating an incident during which a prison van was rammed off the road by another vehicle.
It happened on the N2 at Clontibret yesterday evening as a prisoner was being transported from court.
A number of Irish Prison Service staff were also in the van.
Gardaí said this evening that they are investigating a hit-and-run road traffic collision.
A spokesperson said that no injuries have been reported.
It is understood the prison van was later escorted by gardaí to Dublin and the prisoner remains in custody.
The van was returning from a sitting of Monaghan Circuit Court today.
