Residents on the Aran Islands are dealing with the implications of a loss of electricity for more than 24 hours.
A cable supplying power to the three islands was severed by what ESB networks describes as a "third party" at 2.30pm yesterday.
It is understood that construction work in the area led to an overhead line being damaged.
This resulted in power outages across the islands with around 800 customers initially impacted.
While supply was restored to homes and businesses on Inis Mór soon afterwards, residents on Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr were without power until 4.30pm.
ESB Networks has apologised to those who were impacted by the outage.
Former manager of the island's co-op Paddy Crowe said the lack of supply caused serious difficulties for homes and businesses, some of which had to close today.
As well as impacting properties, the absence of power also affected internet connections and other services reliant on electricity.
Mr Crowe said many islanders are now having to deal with thawed perishable food supplies, that were being stored in freezers, before the power cut.
It is thought thousands of euro worth of produce has been ruined as a result.
