Two men have died in separate road crashes in counties Meath and Westmeath.

A man in his 40s died following a road crash in Co Meath in the early hours of this morning.

The man, who was travelling alone, was seriously injured after the car he was driving hit a wall on Patrick Street in Trim shortly before 2am.

He was brought to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where he later died.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has been notified, as the car involved had come to the attention of gardaí prior to the crash.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the Patrick Street area between 1.30am and 2am, including road users who may have dashcam footage, to contact Trim Garda Station on 046 948 1540, or any Garda station.

In a separate incident, a man in his 70s died in a collision involving a lorry and the car he was driving on the N4 near N4 near Ballinlack, Co Westmeath, shortly after 5pm.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman in her 70s, who was a passenger in the car, was airlifted to Tallaght University Hospital, where her condition is understood to be serious.

The lorry driver, a man in his 40s, was taken to the Regional Hospital Mullingar with non-life threatening injuries.
