A literary festival in Galway has said two eight-foot tall pencils were stolen in the city last night.

The decorative pencils proved not to be stationary when they were stolen from outside Carroll's Bar on Dominic Street.

Gardaí on the pencil case have been able to return one so far, according to the festival.

The pencils are designed to fit over street bollards outside various venues taking part in the Cúirt International Festival of Literature.

The festival said it was appealing for information while "pursuing leads".

The festival concludes on 10 April.
