Vicky Phelan has sent a special message to her good friend Charlie Bird to wish him well on his 'Climb with Charlie' project at Croagh Patrick this weekend.

She also expressed her disappointment that she will not be able to join the former RTÉ journalist on the challenge.

In a message on social media, the Limerick woman said that while she is unable to climb the holy mountain this Saturday, she will be there in spirit.

Ms Phelan said she will be well represented by her family, her father and mother, her sister, her two brothers, nieces and nephews and by friends from her ‘Vicky's tribe’ group who are undertaking the climb on her behalf.

She announced several weeks ago that she had to pull out of the climb as she was simply too unwell physically to undertake the challenge.

Ms Phelan - who has cervical cancer - said her medical treatment had left her unable to walk without the help of a walking aid.

In an update today, she said she is now feeling a bit better and able to walk short distances, but her movement is very limited.

But she will tune to RTÉ's The Late Late Show tomorrow night, which will feature a segment with Charlie from Westport on the eve of the climb.

The Annacotty-based mother-of-two said she wished all those undertaking the Climb with Charlie in Mayo and all over the country well in their efforts on Saturday.

The events are being held to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease and Pieta House.

Ms Phelan said so many people take the simple activity of going for a walk for granted, but a lot of people cannot do it.

She wished Mr Bird "all her love and support" for Saturday and expressed her disappointment that she cannot participate in person.
