There have been renewed calls for Dublin City Council to back control of collection. It follows recent figures which show that illegal dumping is costing at least €1 million a year.

The problem of illegal dumping has persisted since the collection service was privatised at the end of 2011.

Dublin City Council says it is a particular problem in bag collection areas in the city that do not have front garden storages for wheelie bins.

In response local groups in the North Inner City, such as Sherrard Pride of Place, get together for clean-ups helped by local gardaí and city council staff.

Lynn Hooper of Sherrard Pride of Place says dumping has been a big problem in the local area for a number of years.

She says it can be a problem in rental properties but that landlords not providing bin facilities is also a factor.

Another member of the group Krishna Rajeesh says they try to get all the residents together to clean up and stop dumping.

The group says that the city council helps with CCTV that can record car registration numbers and will clean sites that have become a dumping ground.

City councillors voted in 2019 for the city council to retake control or to remunicipalise waste collection and a special sub committee has been examining the issue since then.

However a recent feasibility report has not yet been made public.

Chair of the remunicipalisation of waste collection service sub committee Cllr Daithí Doolan (SF) said that other European cities have remunicipalised waste and many have a sole operator.

He said part of the problem here is different waste companies operating on the same street on different days.

And he said the true cost of illegal dumping is well over €1 million a year as the city council's figures do not include the work of local area offices.

However, under European law any waste collection model would involve bin charges as the service would have to be cost neutral to the local authority.
