The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre has said it has reported to the gardaí an incident in which several performers and crew of the Lion King were racially abused.

In a statement, the theatre said the incident happened recently as members of the production, which is currently running in Dublin, were making their way home after a performance.

The theatre described it as vile and shocking, adding that it and Disney Theatrical Productions strongly condemns all forms of discrimination.

It said that it fully stands with performers and crew, adding that it has put plans in place to support those affected by the incident.

The theatre said it and Disney would be making a donation to the Irish Network Against Racism.

The Lion King will run at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre until 4 Feb

The statement also said that over the last 25 years the Lion King has been a beacon of optimism and inclusion around the globe.

In a statement, gardaí said officers at Pearse Street are investigating reports of a public order incident at Hanover Street East, Dublin 2 on Friday, 28 January.

They say that it is understood that shortly before 11pm, a number of staff were subjected to verbal abuse by a group of male youths, after leaving their place of work.

No arrests have been made, but inquires are ongoing, according to the statement.
