Galway City Council has voted to install a temporary cycle lane along the promenade in Salthill.
Councillors have voted by 17 to one in favour of the proposal.
The motion, proposed by Mayor Colette Connolly, called for a two-way segregated cycle track along the route from Grattan Road to the Bearna Road.
An amendment by Councillor Donal Lyons, calling for the motion to be deferred pending more detail to elected representatives, was defeated.
At the start of this afternoon's council meeting, the Mayor amended her motion to have a portion of the cycle track - from Blackrock to the Bearna Road - one way only.
This was to minimise the possible need for the local authority to issue a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for some land on this section of the proposed cycle lane.
Councillors were advised by planners before today’s vote that the cycle lanes would require engineering measures such as the removal of central islands, removal or relocation of bus stops along the route and possible CPOs.

A proposal last year to have "pop-up" cycle lanes on both sides of the Salthill Promenade was abandoned due to concerns from local residents and businesses about the removal of hundreds of car parking spaces along the route.
In advance of today’s vote, Mayor Connolly called for a "bold and brave" approach from her fellow councillors.
She said steps needed to be taken to address the "abysmal and treacherous" cycling infrastructure in the city.
The Galway Cycling Campaign has welcomed today’s decision.
Galway city council says planners will now consider the implications of today's vote from engineering, environmental and project management perspectives.
Earlier this month, Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said funding for the cycle lane in Salthill would be provided by Government if the council approved the proposal.
The National Transport Authority said it has committed to providing funding for active travel projects in Galway City, subject to project approval and cost management guidelines.
