Cigarettes worth almost €230,000 were seized by Revenue officers at Rosslare Europort during a search of a van.

The search took place as a result of routine profiling on Saturday when the officers stopped a German-registered van which had come off the ferry from Cherbourg.

A discovery was made of 320,000 "Marlboro"-branded cigarettes which would have a retail value of almost €230,000, representing a loss to the Exchequer of about €179,000.

Two people from Poland were questioned as a result of the seizure.

According to Revenue, the find was part of their ongoing operations targeting the "shadow economy" and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
