Revenue officers have seized tobacco worth more than €690,000 in a search of a lorry and trailer at Rosslare Europort.

The 'roll your own' tobacco was discovered when officers at the port carried out a search of a Polish-registered vehicle which had just disembarked a ferry from Cherbourg in France.

Detector dog Gus and Revenue's mobile X-ray scanner were used during the search.

A total of over 1,100kg of tobacco, branded 'West Red' and 'John Player Special Black', was found during the operation.

It would have a retail value of about €692,000 which, according to a Revenue spokesperson, represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €570,000.

A Polish man in his 40s was questioned and Revenue said that investigations are ongoing into the seizure.

"This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products," Revenue said.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
