Croagh Patrick pilgrimage to go ahead in July

The traditional Reek Sunday pilgrimage on Croagh Patrick has been adapted for 2021 to take account of public health guidance as a result of Covid-19.

The Catholic Church says this year's pilgrimage will take place in an extended format throughout the month of July.

Administrator of Westport Parish, Fr Charlie McDonnell, says arrangements are being made for confessions to be heard at the summit on several days of the week, with mass celebrated at noon each day apart from Saturday.

He is asking priests from around the country to volunteer to assist in the month-long effort.

Last year’s pilgrimage was officially cancelled due to the pandemic, although several hundred people did climb the mountain on the last Sunday of July.

Those planning on doing so this year are asked to plan their journey in advance and prepare for all weather eventualities.

Numbers will be restricted in line with guidelines relating to outdoor gatherings.

At the moment, this means that 100 people can gather outdoors until 4 July, with 200 people permitted to congregate outside from 5 July.
