The Irish Prison Service has said that 19 positive cases of Covid-19 have been identified among the prisoner population in Mountjoy Prison.

A number of staff in the prison have also tested positive and contact tracing has started.

The Prison Service said it was working closely with public health and the HSE.

The positive staff cases are currently confined to specific areas within the prison.

The service said that the testing of all staff and prisoners for Mountjoy and Dóchas prisons is ongoing.

It said that to help prevent the spread of infection, a strict regime has been introduced which may impact on access to video visits and phone calls in the short term for prisoners in precautionary isolation.

The service said it was working to ensure that it can continue to facilitate family contact as far as possible.
