Four people in an inflatable dinghy, who were struggling to make it back to shore against strong winds and tides, have been rescued by Howth RNLI in Dublin.

There was a request to launch the inshore lifeboat at 6.50pm today after reports of an inflatable dinghy in difficulties while returning from Ireland's Eye to Howth harbour.

Weather conditions at the time gave good visibility but there was a strong southerly wind and a powerful tide at the location, according to a statement from the RNLI.

The volunteer lifeboat crew quickly located the dinghy which was struggling to make progress back to Howth harbour. The four people aboard were all wearing lifejackets and "were in good spirits".

The volunteer lifeboat crew took the dinghy in tow and returned safely into the harbour.

Stephen Harris, Howth RNLI Deputy Launch Authority, explained: "The call was raised by a concerned member of the public.

"The people on board the dinghy were just not aware that they were not making any headway trying to return to the harbour. We were happy to assist and they were extremely grateful."
