The HSE is opening more free walk-in Covid-19 test centres around the country from today.

A new test centre for asymptomatic people has opened in Wexford town and will operate from 10am to 6pm for seven days with no appointment is needed.

It will run in parallel to the existing drive-through (referral only) at the Wexford Test Centre in the town's Whitemill Industrial Estate.

Two additional walk-in centres will open in Donegal at the GAA Centre of Excellence grounds in Convoy (Saturday to Monday, 11am-7pm) and at the GAA Club Car Park, Carndonagh (Tuesday to Thursday next week, 11am-7pm).

Other Donegal centres in operation include Milford Co-Op Livestock Mart on Glenkeen in Milford (open until 7pm tomorrow) and St Conal's Hospital Campus in Letterkenny (open until 14 May, 9.30am to 6pm).

A free test centre also opened at Cavan Swimming Pool & Leisure Centre from today until Monday from 11am to 7pm daily.

The walk-in services are free and available to people who do not have any Covid-19 symptoms. People with symptoms are still advised to contact their GP for a test appointment at a different site.

Since the first walk-in test centre, more than 62,300 people have been tested.

As of this morning, 2,048 positive cases of Covid-19 were detected in people who used the walk-in testing service.

Niamh O'Beirne, national lead of Test and Trace, said: "We are seeing increasing numbers of people avail of our free walk-in Covid-19 testing service.

"We are continuing to work closely with the HSE’s Public Health teams across the country to determine the best locations for these walk-in centres.

"Today, Friday, walk-in testing centres open in Wexford and in Cavan. Over the coming days walk-in testing will be available in centres in Tallaght, Ardee, Co Louth, Portlaoise and Longford.

"We continue to urge people in those communities where walk-in testing is available to go and get a test and help contain the spread of Covid-19."

People can use the walk-in test centre if they do not have symptoms of Covid-19 and are aged 16 years and over, live in the same area as the centre, and have not tested positive for Covid-19 in the last six months.
