A trucker who transported a €1.19k consignment of cocaine from the UK to Co Meath last July has been jailed for nine months at Trim Circuit Court.

John Reynolds, 63, from Caltragh Dromard Co Sligo pleaded guilty to possessing the drug for the purpose of sale or supply on 11 July 2020 at Ashbourne Business Centre Ballybin Road Ashbourne Co Meath.

The court heard that acting on intelligence gardaí had been on the lookout for a specific truck coming into the State from Larne, Co Antrim on that date.

The gardaí tailed the truck at a discreet distance from Carrickarnon in north Louth to Ashbourne where it parked at the Business Centre.

Approximately 20 minutes later a Caddy van parked close by and the drugs were transferred to it from the truck.

Gardaí who later stopped both vehicles discovered 17 bars of cocaine hidden in an air compressor on the van.

The court heard that Reynolds owed money to loan sharks arising from medical and gambling debts and was to get €5k for transporting the cocaine.

Judge Patrick Quinn imposed a sentence of three years backdated to July when Reynolds was taken into custody and also suspended the final 18 months of the sentence.
