The Defence Forces have delivered the first consignment of Covid-19 vaccines to islands off the west coast of Ireland.

Following a request from the HSE, Defence Forces personnel delivered the consignment to the Aran Islands, and to Árainn Mhór in Co Donegal.

Three shipments of the Moderna vaccine were flown to Inis Mór and Inis Oírr, and Árainn Mhór from Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, by two EC-135 helicopters.

The vaccines were handed over to GPs on arrival, to be administered to residents on the islands.

The Defence Forces have said it marks a significant milestone in the roll-out of vaccines across the country, and highlights their support to the health service in the fight against Covid-19.
