Street traders on Henry Street in Dublin city centre have been given the go ahead to set up a limited number of stalls for the run up to Christmas.

A compromise between traders, Lord Mayor Hazel Chu and Dublin City Council was reached after three weeks of talks.

It will allow a limited number of traders to work after the council prevented them from doing so in a letter on 11 November due to Covid-19 concerns and rolling restrictions.

A council spokesperson said there are plans for 25 stalls, with 15 planned for Henry Street and ten to be located on O'Connell Street.

Normally there are 40 stalls located on Henry Street.

The traditional setting-up of the stalls just after midnight on 1 December was missed for the first time, but it is expected that the stalls will be in operation by the end of this week and will be in place up to Christmas Eve.

In a statement, the Henry Street Traders Committee thanked the Lord Mayor for her help.

Independent Councillor Christy Burke said it was a "great day for the traders as they were an integral part of Christmas festivities".
