Gardaí investigating the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan expect progress in the case in the near future, a court has been told.

The 44-year-old man charged with the murder of Garda Horkan in Castlerea, Co Roscommon in June has again been deemed unfit to appear by video link in court.

Stephen Silver, of Aughaward, Foxford, Co Mayo, is continuing to receive treatment at the Central Mental Hospital.

Judge Deirdre Gearty said that she had received correspondence from Professor Damian Mohan, a consultant psychiatrist at the CMH, stating that the accused was unfit to appear.

"In the absence of Mr Silver, I have a note from Prof Mohan that it is not in his interest to be produced today, that his medical condition would not permit it. So, in the circumstances it will be dealt with in his absence," she said.

It is the tenth time Mr Silver has deemed unfit to appear by video link at Harristown District Court, which is located beside Castlerea Prison in Roscommon.

Defence solicitor, Ciaran Smyth said he was anxious to see some progress in the case.

Sgt Mark Mahon said that the file is with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and they anticipate developments soon.

"The file is being actively reviewed by the DPP's office. It is with an officer at the DPP's office at the moment and we are liaising with the office to make sure progress is being made. We anticipate in the very near future that we will be in a position to proceed further," he said.

His application that Mr Silver be remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on 6 November was granted by Judge Gearty.
