A number of lifeboats as well as a Coast Guard helicopter are off the southeast coast this afternoon to assist a large cargo ship which has lost power.

It is understood the ship's crew raised the alarm after it lost power about two nautical miles from Hook Head in Co Wexford.

RNLI boats from Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and Rosslare have been launched as well as the R117 helicopter based at Waterford Airport.

There are no reports of any injuries to any crew members on board the ship.

It is believed that a plan is being drawn up to tow the vessel to safety.
