A leisure centre in Co Laois is to close with the loss of 30 jobs.

The Board of Portlaoise Leisure Centre confirmed today that the facility would close with immediate effect.

In a statement it said the closure was due to "severe financial constraints caused by the Covid-19 pandemic".

The Board said it had taken the decision "with deep regret" and that the company that operated the centre would now be wound up.

The 30 job losses include full and part-time positions and staff were informed of the situation last night.

A liquidator has also been appointed.

Despite the closure, the Board said that following several meetings with Laois County Council in recent weeks they were "confident that a bright future lies ahead" for the centre.

Laois County Council said today that it "is anxious that the public investment in the Leisure Centre will continue to be available for the benefit of the public at large".

The Council said it will "make every effort to ensure the future viability of the leisure complex".

The local authority confirmed that refurbishment works on the building and the site will now get under way "to make sure it will be ready for use as soon as it is safe to do so".
