A French registered fishing vessel has been detained by the Irish Naval Service off the south coast.

The boat was detained late last night by the crew of the LÉ CIARA around 120 nautical miles south west of Mizen Head.

The operation was connected to alleged breaches of fishing regulations.

The vessel is now being escorted to Castletownbere where it will be handed over to the gardaí.

The Defence Forces says this is the fifth vessel detained by the Naval Service so far this year.
