Five men from Mayo, Mullingar and London have completed a five-day 2,000 km cycling challenge from Lourdes to Knock.

The ultra-cycle challenge in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland is raising funds to help build a regional centre in Swinford, Co Mayo.

The five - Jonathon Verry, Gary Bigley, Maurice Dore and Alan Heaney - began their cycle in Lourdes on Tuesday morning, then made their way through France and across the English Channel (by ferry), then through England and Wales before taking the ferry across the Irish sea and finally cycling west to Knock.

Team leader Alan Heaney said the toughest part of the challenge was the lack of sleep and cycling in different kinds of weather.

"This was an extremely tough, mental and physical challenge and along with cycling up to 400km per day, we encountered all weather, even four seasons in one day which tested us to our physical limits.

"However, we are delighted we undertook the 2,000km cycle and we are thrilled to be arriving home safe and sound."

The five men were welcomed home after their epic journey by supporters and well-wishers at a homecoming party in Swinford.

Proceeds will also be used to help Pieta House in providing support for people in the farming community.
