The €10 million redevelopment of the Dún Laoghaire sea baths will not provide any designated swimming facility the local council has confirmed.

The old baths complex has been derelict for some time and the council has now signed contracts for a new scheme that is due to be completed in 2020.

It will involve a new walkway, café and studios for artists but no segregated swimming facilities.

There will be a jetty to allow access to the sea but swimmers will have to share the space with other sea sports enthusiasts such as kayakers and windsurfers.

A spokesperson for Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council said: "Swimmers and other sea users will continue to use the water together as they do currently in other marine locations like Sandycove and Seapoint."

"What the new baths will provide is an enhanced facility for this purpose with the new jetty."
