Seán Quinn, one of Ireland’s richest men, the self-made tycoon who built his empire on staying local and keeping his employees loyal, may have come to the end of the road today as Anglo Irish Bank appointed a share receiver to take control of the Quinn family’s equity interest in the insurance group.In what was a tumultuous day for Irish business, another Irish tycoon, Derek Quinlan, saw NAMA appoint a receiver to take over nine properties owned by him and his immediate family.
But what of the billions still owed to Irish citizens? Reporter Paul Murphy looks back at what lead to the collapse of the Quinn empire; re-visiting a conversation he had with Seán Quinn in June of last year.
In studio, Miriam O’Callaghan explores what happens next – what are the prospects of getting the Quinn billions back and can Seán Quinn walk away from this massive debt?
