Spanish bank Bankinter says it has now issued more than €5 billion in lending across the country, seven years after it entered the market.

The company acquired Avant Money in 2019, which at the time had a lending portfolio worth €400m.

It said €4 billion of the lending issued here since then has been in the form of mortgages, and it now represents 8% of the country's mortgage market.

Avant Money does also offer personal loans and credit cards, while Bankinter recently launched a savings product for consumers under its own name.

The company said, overall, it has a 3.6% share of lending to Irish households.

"We believe there is a significant opportunity to bring greater competition, innovation, and choice to Irish banking customers, supported by the strength, experience, and long-term commitment of the wider Bankinter Group," said Niall Corbett, country manager at Bankinter Ireland. "This milestone is not only about what we have achieved so far, but about the broader banking business we are continuing to build for customers in Ireland in the years ahead."
