Retail sales slipped in February, but up year-on-year

According to the CSO, sectors showing the highest monthly volume decreases in sales were clothing, hardware, paints and glass and motor trades.

The volume of retail sales slipped by 0.8% in February, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

However, they were up by 0.8% compared to the same month in 2025.

Excluding motor trades, the monthly volume of retail sales was up by 0.3% this February and grew by 0.2% year-on-year.

When it comes to the value of retail sales it decreased by 0.6% in the month, but rose by 2.1% since February last year.

According to the CSO, sectors showing the highest monthly volume decreases were clothing, footwear and textiles (-4.4%), hardware, paints and glass (-3.6%), and motor trades (-1.4%).

The largest monthly volume increases were recorded in pharmaceuticals, medical and cosmetic articles, as well as books and newspapers.

Over the year, sales in books, hardware and pharmaceuticals all increased, while furniture, clothing and food ategories saw decline in sales.
