Around 50 Irish-based jobs are at risk at eBay's Irish operation, RTÉ News understands.

It is part of a global restructuring that the company announced yesterday which will result in around 800 job cuts worldwide, or 6% of its total workforce.

Around 1,000 people are employed in Ireland by eBay.

When contacted by RTÉ News, the company did not comment on how many Irish-based roles will be impacted by the global job cuts.

"We are taking steps to reinvest across our business and align our structure with our strategic priorities, which will affect certain roles across our workforce," an eBay spokesperson said.

"We are grateful for the contributions of the employees impacted and are committed to supporting them with care and respect."

The Department of Enterprise said it has not received a collective redundancy notification from the company.

"The Minister has received correspondence from eBay in relation to a restructuring process within the company," a spokesperson said.

eBay set up its first Irish base in 2004, and its European headquarters are located at Blanchardstown in Dublin.

Irish impact of Block layoffs not clear

It is not yet known what impact global layoffs will have on the Irish operation of financial technology firm Block.

The company has announced that it will cut over 4,000 jobs, nearly half its workforce, due to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across its operations.

Block was co-founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

"Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company. We're already seeing it internally," Mr Dorsey said in a statement.

"A significantly smaller team using the tools can do more and do it better," he added.

Last month, Block announced the opening of new offices in Dublin for its 300 Irish-based employees.

Contacted by RTÉ News, the company said it would not be giving a regional breakdown of the job cuts.

A consultation process in several of Block's international markets is now underway.

The Department of Enterprise said it has not received a collective redundancy notification from Block.

Such notices are required in cases where companies are planning 30 or more redundancies.

Block is the parent company of Square, the point-of-sale mobile payments platform that allows vendors to accept and process card payments.

Other Block brands include the digital wallet Cash App, music platform Tidal, and a bitcoin wallet called Bitkey.
