Bank of Ireland contactless payments surged to record levels during the final quarter of 2025, according to its analysis of customer transactions.

In the final three months of last year, eCommerce contactless card transactions, which includes digital wallets, Apple Pay and Google Pay, increased by 10% year on year.

Contactless 'tap and go' payment levels rose by 4%, BOI said.

Over 2 million contactless ‘tap and go’ payments took place on December 23, a new all-time peak for these payments, whilst over 1.1 million eCommerce contactless card transactions were recorded on November 28 - another single day record for Bank of Ireland customers.

Following the introduction of SEPA Instant last year which allows customers to make an instant euro payment to any European bank, BOI plans to launch Zippay and the new mobile app this year.

According to the bank's latest figures, the use of AI has helped protect its customers from fraud preventing €9.7 million in losses in 2025.

Commenting on technology enhancements, BOI's chief operating officer Ciarán Coyle said they provide "greater stability and resilience and a smoother, more secure customer experience."

Mr Coyle announced the launch of the bank's new strategy later this year which will outline its further investment in digital platforms.
