SuperValu and Centra owner Musgrave said today that prices on Kerrygold butter products it stocks will be reduced across its stores nationwide.
The cuts come into effect from today.
Musgrave said the reductions, worth up to 9% across the Kerrygold range, will deliver savings of up to 50 cent on Kerrygold products.
This will see a range of Kerrygold branded butter products reduce from €5.49 to €4.99 and from €3.29 to €2.99.
"We recognise that household budgets continue to be under pressure and are committed to passing on savings to customers. By working closely with our suppliers, we aim to deliver value where possible," Musgrave said in a statement.
Afterwards, Tesco announced a similar cut reducing the price of a pound of Kerrygold butter by 50 cent, thus bringing the current price down from €5.49 to €4.99.
It follows recent reductions made on Tesco's own label butter products.
In a statement, the company said it is "committed to providing real customer value... on the staples that matter most to them."
In December, SuperValu, Centra, ALDI Ireland and Lidl Ireland all announced a cut in the price of their own brand butter ranges.
Responding to the news some retailers have cut the price of Kerrygold, ICMSA President Denis Drennan said the farmers producing the milk turned into Kerrygold have seen their milk price fall by "well in excess of 30% since last August and are now receiving a price that's below the costs of production".
The head of the group representing dairy farmers said the situation is "disastrous."
"The last time this happened in 2016 retailers dictated a lower price back to the farmers while keeping their own retail prices, and just mopped up the farmers' margins."
"That cannot be allowed happen again and the farmers producing the milk that makes the butter must be able to make a living," Mr Drennan added.
