Four retailers - SuperValu, Centra, ALDI Ireland Lidl Ireland - have announced a cut in the price of their own brand butter ranges.

Musgrave, which owns SuperValu and Centra, said the 15% cut will deliver savings of up to €0.60 per pack on own-brand Irish creamery butter products, including salted and unsalted options in both 227g and 454g pack sizes.

This will see all SuperValu and Centra 454g own-brand butter products reduce from €3.99 to €3.39, while all 227g own-brand butter products will reduce from €2.39 to €2.09.

The changes came into effect yesterday.

"We understand the ongoing cost pressures facing households and remain focused on delivering value for customers. We continue to invest heavily in our own-brand range to ensure shoppers can access great quality products at the best possible prices," Musgrave said.

ALDI Ireland also said today it will reduce prices across its private label butter range with immediate effect.

ALDI said the price of its Kilkeely Pure Irish Creamery Butter 454g will go down to €3.39 from €3.99, while its Kilkeely Pure Irish Creamery Butter 227g will be reduced to €2.09 from €2.39

The supermarket group said it will continue to review the market on a daily basis to ensure it remains the best value retailer on price.

Niall O'Connor, Country Managing Director at ALDI Ireland, said the chain has been cutting the prices of hundreds of products right across its range over recent months as it continues to deliver on its promise to customers.

"This reduction in butter price is the latest in our ongoing dedication to price cuts on household essentials. Our aim is to always have a discount versus the more expensive full price supermarkets and to keep our prices as low as possible, and our continual focus on the market means we can and will respond quickly," Mr O'Connor added.

Lidl Ireland also said today it will cut the price of butter in-store immediately.

It is cutting the price of its own-brand Dairy Manor 454g butter from €3.99 to €3.39 and its 227g butter from €2.39 to €2.09.

The supermarket said the cut is part of a wider series of recent price reductions coming into effect on everyday essential items with Lidl investing a total of €21m on more than 300 price cuts on staple items such as pasta, cereals and convenience meals as well as nappies and pet food.

Robert Ryan, chief executive of Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland, said the supermarket chain understands that rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis has posed significant challenges for shoppers as well as its suppliers in recent years.

"This price drop represents a significant investment; but we are determined to support our loyal shoppers and reduce prices on the products that matter the most to demonstrate our commitment to always being the best value retailer in the country," Mr Ryan said.

"Our customers will continue to see further price drops in the coming months," he added.
