Molson Coors said today that it will cease production of its Franciscan Well brands early next year and as a result, propose to close its Franciscan Well brewery in Cork.
The beer maker said today's decision was not taken lightly, adding that it is providing the 15 impacted workers with every support.
It said that in the face of a challenging craft beer category and other economic pressures impacting its customers and consumers, it has not been possible to grow its brands to the level needed to sustain the brewery as part of its UK and Ireland production network.
It added that its local distribution partner will be working with customers in the coming weeks.
Among its brands, the brewery produces Chieftain IPA, Rebel Red, Well Hazy, Shandon Stout and Docklands.
"We have entered into a consultation process with our impacted employees and will work through this process with integrity and respect for everyone affected. We will seek redeployment for all displaced employees wherever possible," the company said.
"We understand the special place the Franciscan Well brewery and brands have in the local community and remain open to conversations with interested parties about the future of the brewery and brands," it added.
The Franciscan Well Brewery is a separate entity to the Franciscan Well Bar Brewpub.
