The European Commission has appointed global payment service provider SumUp to a VAT Expert Group, which will advise the European Commission on VAT matters over the next three years.
The VAT Export Group includes both individuals with VAT expertise and key organisations, with newly appointed members including Amazon, Uber and Zalando.
SumUp will be represented in the forum by Anton Tsonev, Global Head of Tax and by Gergana Dimova, Senior Tax Manager for Europe.
VAT raised roughly €1.19 trillion in 2022.
SumUp noted that SMEs make up 99.8% of EU companies and two-thirds of the private sector, yet the average micro-business is estimated to spend almost €3,000 a year just to remain VAT compliant.
This suite of reforms, shaped by the European Commission, VEG, and national tax authorities, aims to make VAT simpler for businesses.
Hermione McKee, Chief Financial Officer at SumUp, said that working closely with millions of small and micro-merchants across the EU, the company sees firsthand the challenges and opportunities they face every day.
"We don't just observe the market; we are an integral part of its fabric. This gives us a unique perspective that we hope to bring to the European Commission, contributing practical, hands-on insights," she said.
"It is a privilege to be able to connect high-level policy discussions with the realities of the market," she added.
