The personal data of some Renault customers in the UK was stolen in a cyberattack on one of its service providers, the car maker said today.
Renault Group UK said its third-party data processing provider was targeted by hackers, making it the latest in a series of cyberattacks impacting companies.
The compromised data includes "some or all of: customer names, addresses, dates of birth, gender, phone number, vehicle identification numbers and vehicle registration details", the company said in a statement.
It added that it was an "isolated incident which has been contained," and did not impact Renault Group UK systems.
The French-owned carmaker said it was in the process of contacting affected customers and had alerted the relevant authorities.
It comes shortly after British automaker Jaguar Land Rover was directly targeted by a damaging cyberattack last month that halted operations at its UK factories.
Cyber gangs have increasingly targeted UK luxury brands and retailers, including Marks and Spencer, Harrods and the Co-op food chain.
Such cyberattacks have cost companies hundreds of millions of pounds in lost sales.
In Japan, beer giant Asahi this week halted shipments from its breweries after suffering a damaging cyberattack.
