Irish author makes €2.1 million settlement with Revenue

A top-selling Irish author of young adult books has made a settlement of more than €2.1 million with the Revenue Commissioners for under-declaring income tax.

Darren O'Shaughnessy, who writes under the pen name Darren Shan, topped the latest Tax Defaulters' List.

The company director and landlord was found to have under-declared income tax to the tune of over €1.44 million, following an audit by Revenue.

The 53-year-old, with an address in Shannon Grove in Pallaskenry in Co Limerick, has written a range of novels including the Saga of Darren Shan series and the Demonata series.

When interest of €271,090 and penalties of €432,227 were added, the total amount he owed the taxman was €2.144 million.

The second biggest settlement listed in the quarterly list for the period covering April to June was for more than €1.25 million by Edmond Moloney, with an address in Pinheiros Altos in Almancil in Portugal.

The company director, landlord and property developer was found to have under-declared income tax to the tune of €749,231.

When interest of €278,666 and penalties of €224,767 were included, the total settlement came to just over €1.25 million.

The third highest settlement on the latest list was made by Tony Chawke, with an address at Sunville on the North Circular Road in Limerick.

Following a Revenue audit, the company director and landlord was found to have under-declared income tax by €344,129.

When interest and penalties were added, the total owed rose to €526,550.
