New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for August dipped by 0.3% to 168,600 people compared to the previous month.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 177,600 people for August, of which 53.8% were men.
It noted that the 25-34 years age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in August at 24.3% of the total.
The counties that recorded the largest percentage increases in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to August were Dublin, with numbers there up 7.7% and Kildare rising by 5.5%. The biggest falls were recorded in Kerry (down 12.1%) and Donegal (down 8%).
The CSO also said that there were 121,518 people on the Live Register for less than one year, which marked an increase of 5.1% on the same month last year.
The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance.
Figures published last week by the CSO showed that the unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in August from a month earlier.
The unemployment rate for July was also revised to 4.8% from the previously published 4.9%.
