The chief executive of Chambers Ireland has said he is not concerned by the lack of detail in the National Development Plan.

The Government yesterday announced a flagship plan to build infrastructure over the next five years which will include an overall investment of €112 billion.

The revised National Development Plan contains funding for housing, energy, water and transport projects.

There has been criticism at the lack of detail in the NDP, however, Ian Talbot said Government departments have the skills, resources and expertise to deliver projects.

"If they know what their budget is, let them go out and deliver on that budget. I think that's probably a better way of approaching things now, rather than a centralised approach where it's not clear where the accountability lies."

Mr Talbot said what is important now, is delivery and accountability. "If you look back over the last few years, we've had plenty of announcements of big investment; we've not managed to get boots on the ground, we really need to get things moving."

Chambers Ireland said it would be good to see local government play a role in the NDP. "Local government did a great job for example during Covid, so let's see where we can bring local government to play in some of these projects that we need to deliver too," Mr Talbot told Morning Ireland.

He said regional development is the priority, particularly projects like Metrolink, eastern water supply, the western rail link, and Cork Luas. "There's so many things we need to start delivering on and we've got to look across the whole country."
