Irish residents spent over €14 million on overnight trips across Ireland between July and September last year, up almost 7% on the same period in 2023.
The figures from the Central Statistics Office show that holiday trips accounted for the largest share of domestic nights at 55%, followed by visits to friends or relatives at 36% and business trips at 2%.
The Southern region was the most popular destination, accounting for over 40% of all trips.
2.2 million trips were made to Clare, Tipperary, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Cork, and Kerry.
The Northern and Western region of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon had the least number of domestic overnight trips - at 1.5 million trips.
Across all regions, the length of stay decreased compared to 2023, from an average of 2.9 nights to 2.7 nights.
Today's figures show that Irish residents spent a total of 28.4 million nights on outbound trips in the third quarter of last year.
74% of these trips were holidays, while 22% were to visit friends and 2% were business related.
The total number of outbound trips increased slightly on the same time last year, up over 6%.
The average length of stay for outbound overnight trips was 6.8 nights, compared with 6.9 the same time in 2023.
