RTÉ News has announced the appointment of journalist Aengus Cox as its new Agriculture and Consumer Affairs correspondent.

Mr Cox has worked for RTÉ News since 2012, across radio, television and online.

During that time he has worked as a reporter on Radio 1's Morning Ireland, where he covered stories relating to food production and the rising cost of insurance.

As a reporter on the business desk, Mr Cox reported on the impact of Brexit, the rising cost of living and housing.

Meanwhile his time on the newsroom's foreign desk saw him report from London during the British general election, while he recently travelled to Sudan to cover the impact of the country's ongoing civil war.

Prior to joining RTÉ, Mr Cox was a reporter and presenter with East Coast Radio, where he hosted a weekend current affairs programme.

"Farming in Ireland has reached a pivotal point, with competing pressures from key environmental targets and the ever-increasing cost of doing business," Mr Cox said.

"Farmers are looking to quickly adapt practices in reducing carbon emissions, while at the same time needing to stay competitive. I hope to visit as many farms, agri-businesses, and other stakeholders as I can to tell these stories as they deal with this transition.

"Technological advances are also hugely beneficial to consumers, offering convenience and security when it comes to things like online shopping. I look forward to investigating how this is affecting consumers and, crucially, reporting on how to avoid getting caught out by scams and keep people's information, and money safe!"
