Electricity grid operator Eirgrid has appointed Cathal Marley as its new chief executive.

Mr Marley joins EirGrid from Gas Networks Ireland where he is currently CEO. He has over 20 years' experience in the utilities and infrastructure sector across the electricity, gas and water industries.

Eirgrid's former CEO Mark Foley stepped down from his role in April.

Cathal Marley said he was joining EirGrid at a pivotal moment as it works on delivering on the decarbonisation of Irish society in line with Government policy and climate ambition.

"I am coming into this role at a transformational time for the organisation and the wider electricity sector," he said.

"Together, we face a sizable and exciting challenge. I look forward to working together to create impactful change that will enable social and economic growth for future generations, while delivering on a cleaner energy future," he added.

Mr Marley will take up his new role in early April 2025.

Eirgrid is working to ensure there is sufficient power available across the network amid supply constraints and is also preparing the country's national grid for large amounts of new renewable power to come on stream.

It also has a range of large infrastructural projects ongoing, including the Celtic Interconnector, the upgrade of cabling in Dublin and planning for a North South Interconnector.
