The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in November from 4.2% a month earlier, new figures the Central Statistics Office show today.

The CSO said the seasonally adjusted number of people who were unemployed stood at 118,900 in November, down from 120,300 in October.

There was a fall of 5,400 in the seasonally adjusted number of people unemployed in November when compared with a year earlier, it added.

Today's CSO figures show that the jobless rate for men was 4.1% in November, unchanged from October and down from 4.3% in November 2023.

The jobless rate for women was also 4.1%, down from 4.3% in October and 4.6% the same time last year.

But the youth unemployment rate increased to 10.9%, from a revised rate of 10.8% in October.

Commenting on today's figures, Jack Kennedy, senior economist at hiring platform Indeed, said they come as the level of job postings on Indeed, a real time measure of labour market activity, remains steady month on month at 16% above the February 1, 2020 pre-pandemic baseline.

"The continuing strength of the Irish labour market will be of comfort to political leaders as government formation talks get underway following the Election 2024 results," Jack Kennedy said.

He noted that the unemployment rate has now remained below 5% for 34 months in a row and the CSO's most recent Labour Force Survey found the estimated employment rate for people aged 15-64 was 75.3% in the third quarter of this year - the highest rate recorded since the series began in 1998.

"While the country faces many domestic and global challenges and amid concerns about the long-term stability of the corporate tax intake, this record level of employment is continuing to generate high levels of income tax while reducing the amount of unemployment support the state must provide," he added.
