New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that a total of 42.9 million tonnes of goods were transported by road in the second quarter of this year - a decrease of 6% on the total of 45.7 million tonnes the same time last year.
The CSO said that activity measured as weight by distance, or tonne-kilometres (tkm), came to 3,511 million tkm in the three months from April to June, an increase of 7% when compared with 3,278 million tkm in the first quarter of 2023.
Today's figures show that the total distance covered by road freight transport in the three months under review was 469 million kilometres, up 4% compared to the second quarter of last year.
