New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that Irish ports handled 12.137 million tonnes of goods in the second quarter of 2024, a marginal decrease when compared with the figure of 12.188 million the same time last year.

The CSO said that goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to 3.9 million tonnes in the three months from April to June, a decrease of 6%.

Nearly 8.2 million tonnes of goods were received in the three month period, an increase of 3%.

Today's figures show that the total number of vessels that arrived in the seven main Irish ports - Bantry, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Rosslare, Shannon and Waterford - in the second quarter fell by 3% when compared with the same time last year.

Dublin Port accounted for 61% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports and for 53% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the second quarter of this year.

They also reveal that Great Britain & Northern Ireland accounted for 33% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports by region of trade in the three month period under review.

EU countries made up 48% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports, the CSO added.
