The Central Bank has launched a €15 limited edition commemorative coin to mark the centenary of the Irish Defence Forces.

The coin design features the official emblem of the Defence Forces, common to all corps, and went on sale today from collectorcoins.ie.

There are just 2,000 coins available and they sell for €65 each.

Proof coins are collectable coins and are not intended for general circulation. They are minted using specially polished dies and blanks that give them a mirror-like finish.

Every year the Central Bank issues a number of collector coin products, on behalf of the Minister for Finance and the Central Bank invites public submissions in relation to themes.

Governor Gabriel Makhlouf presented the commemorative coin to the Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Seán Clancy during a special ceremony at the Central Bank today.

"This commemorative coin is an opportunity to recognise the men and women of our Defence Forces who have, for 100 years, served Ireland, and the valuable contribution they continue to make to the cause of peace and justice across the globe," Governor Makhlouf said.

Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Seán Clancy said the new commemorative coin marks a significant milestone for the organisation and its history.
