New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for September stood at 166,800 people, a decrease of 2,100 people or 1.2% from the previous month.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 162,855 people in September.
It noted that the 25-34 age group made up the largest number of people on the Live Register in September at 38,222 people - or 23.5% of the total.
Kildare was the only county that recorded an increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to September, with a rise of 0.7%.
Today's figures also show that of the 162,855 people on the unadjusted Live Register in September, 55.3% were men.
They also reveal that 13,804 people were benefitting from the EU's Temporary Protection Directive included in the Live Register figures for September, down 3,509 people from August.
The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance.
Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate stood at 4.3% in September, down from a revised rate of 4.5% the same month last year.
