New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for August decreased by 5,700 people (3.3%) to 166,100 people from the figure in July.

The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 177,868 people for August.

Of these 177,868 people, 53.3% were men, the CSO added.

Today's figures show that two counties recorded percentage increases in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to August, with the number of people signing on rising by 1.4% in Kildare and by 1.3% in Offaly.

Meanwhile, the 25-34 age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in August at 41,850 people - or 23.5% of the total.

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance.

Figures earlier this week from the Central Statistics Office showed that the unemployment rate fell to 4.3% in August from a rate of 4.7% in July.
