Coaches concerned at Dublin pick up and drop facilities

Coach transport operators have expressed serious concerns about what they say are inadequate pick up and drop off facilities for coaches and minibuses going to major events in Dublin.

The Coach Tourism and Transport Council of Ireland said parking facilities for buses are also not sufficient.

Popular and large venues such as the Aviva Stadium and Croke Park are particularly an issue, it claimed.

"Unfortunately, in Dublin, patrons attending events at Croke Park are often forced to walk up to 45 minutes from the designated coach parking area to the stadium," said CTTC Chairperson, Willie Martin.

"This situation is unacceptable, especially for passengers with limited mobility or those accompanying young children."

The CTTC said the situation is leading to more people travelling to such events by car rather than by private coach or minibus, causing increased congestion and emissions.

In other European capitals like London and Berlin, the CTTC said, buses can drop off and pick up directly outside stadiums and can often wait on site for passengers.

"The situation in Dublin needs immediate attention, before an all-out transport crisis occurs for such large-scale events" added Martin. "Dublin is a capital city, and it should provide the same standard of accessibility and service as other major capitals."
