More than 200 jobs have reportedly been cut at a pharmaceutical packaging plant in Dundalk.

Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú said workers at the Wasdell Group were served notice in two stages over recent weeks.

It is understood that the facility in Dundalk will close on 30 August, and that up to 220 employees were told they would be losing their jobs.

Deputy Ó Murchú said he has been in contact with some of them since they were informed of the job cuts.

The facility in Dundalk carries out drug testing, primary and secondary packaging production, and distribution in both European and international markets

Mr Ó Murchú said it is understood locally that another company is taking over operations at the plant but he is awaiting "an official response" from Wasdell Group in relation to this and what it will mean for the workers.

In July 2019, the UK-based Wasdell Group opened the pharmaceutical packaging plant in Dundalk which generated hundreds of jobs.

The facility was Wasdell's first plant outside the UK and cost an estimated €30 million to build at IDA Dundalk Science and Technology Park in Mullagharlin.

In 2021 it opened a quality control laboratory at the Dundalk facility.

The company has not yet responded to media queries regarding the reported job cuts and possible takeover of the plant by another pharmaceutical group.

Deputy Ó Murchú has said there must be "clarity" given to the workers who are impacted by this decision.
